15 YEARS OF BKASH: A MILESTONE IN THE DIGITAL FINANCIAL LANDSCAPE

By Admin October 15, 2026 FICCI Special Bulletin on Capital Market

Fifteen years ago, sending money in Bangladesh meant travel, bank queues, or trusted intermediaries. For millions, savings meant cash at home. Formal financial services were out of reach for most. Today, that has changed. bKash has become central to how Bangladesh transacts, saves, and grows.

From Cash to Digital

Launched in 2011, bKash pioneered mobile financial services in Bangladesh. The goal was simple: make money movement safe, instant, and accessible for everyone, from the capital to townships to remote villages. The impact is now national and all-encompassing.

84 million+ registered users rely on bKash. The network includes 350,000 agents and nearly 1 million merchants, with 804,000+ outlets using Bangla QR. The platform processes 277 transactions per second and over 20 million taka every minute.

Building Trust Through Technology

This scale was built on 4 pillars: technology, security, people, and reach. Investments in infrastructure, compliance, fraud prevention, and a skilled workforce created a system users trust. Today, enterprises process real-time payments and individuals manage finances without visiting a bank.

Every transaction tells a story: a daughter sending money home, a farmer buying supplies, a small business taking digital payment, a family receiving emergency support through remittance. That trust is bKash's core asset.

Driving Inclusion

bKash has been key to financial inclusion, especially for women. 43% of account holders are women, many in rural areas. Having accounts in their own name has increased economic participation and autonomy.

bKash also disburses wages for 1,300+ RMG factories, impacting hundreds of thousands of workers, most them women.

Access to credit and savings has expanded too.

Nano Loans: 3.5 million customers have borrowed BDT 100 billion. Average daily disbursement is nearly BDT 100,000.

Digital Savings: 7 million DPS accounts. BDT 30.6 billion taka disbursed on maturity, which has helped families plan for education, health, and other goals.

Remittances and Government Payments

bKash is now a major remittance channel. Funds from 175 countries via 142 MTOs reach families instantly.

Expats sent BDT 200 billion in 2025. In H1 2026, the figure was BDT 142.16 billion. For many, this money funds education, healthcare, and daily needs.

The platform has also made G2P payments seamless. Studies show that for every additional BDT 10 billion transacted via bKash, poverty drops by 0.48% to 0.71%.

An Expanding Ecosystem

The bKash app now offers 200+ services: merchant payments, insurance, remittance, government services, digital FDR, NFC, Pay Later, and biometric login.

Strength of Governance

Global investors, including IFC, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Ant International, and SoftBank, have invested $381 million, validating Bangladesh's digital financial infrastructure. Renowned global investors add strength and value to the good governance of bKash.

Beyond Transactions

bKash's role extends to society. Initiatives include nationwide book reading programs, science festivals, scholarships for students with special needs, healthcare support, and disaster relief during COVID-19 and floods. On the environment, bKash reduces travel and emissions through digital services. The bKash Forestation program is planned to plant trees for customers who meet transaction milestones.

With 600,000 student accounts across 1,800 institutions, bKash is also building financial habits early. The younger generation will embrace digital finance more as a usual habit than an exception.

Recognition

The progress and performance of bKash have been recognized locally and globally: Best Brand for 7 consecutive years, 2 SDG Brand Champion Awards in 2026, and multiple awards for innovation and sustainability. On April 9, 2025, the former Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus presented the Excellence in Investment Award-2025 to bKash founder and CEO Kamal Quadir.

Looking Ahead

In 15 years, bKash has grown from a startup with 37 employees into a benchmark fintech, powered by a professionally competent workforce. Its achievement is not just in numbers, but in trust. The focus now remains the same: make financial services more meaningful, inclusive, and accessible for all of Bangladesh.
